On Thursday, September 17th at 3:30 BST, Teravision Games’ Enrique Fuentes presented at Pocket Gamer Connects Helsinki Digital 2020. The talk was on “Developing a VR Game – An Indie Story” and featured Teravision Games’ path in developing a VR title as an independent developer.

The talk itself focused on a few different key conclusions:

  • Strategy
    • Find your core within the games industry and focus on it.
    • As an indie, you’ve got to be bold, authentic and play to your strengths.
    • You don’t want to over-Blizzard Blizzard!
  • Market
    • VR is still a “blue swimming pool
    • Today, there are 12,500 PSVR devices per game (+5 million devices/397 games), compared to about 1,000 iOS devices per game.
  • Planning
    • Scope can be smaller on VR games since they’re expected to be shorter than flat screen games
    • However, lots of time goes towards optimization and UI challenges
    • This is caused mainly be the lack of control over the game camera, intesified inattentional blindless, and motion sickness considerations

Enrique founded Teravision Games in 2006, and since then has led the studio in the creation of more than 80 games for companies like Microsoft, Namco, Atari, Disney and Nickelodeon. He’s responsible for the strategic direction of the company, focusing on maintaining a studio culture that puts people over products, and provides an environment that develops its team talents to their highest potential. Enrique has also been deeply involved in diverse aspects of game development like creative direction, production and marketing.
